It is pretty normal for a building so grand and majestic to harbor many myths and truths. Here are few things you might have never known about Taj Mahal; one of world's most popular buildings:
1. The site on which Taj Mahal was built belonged to Raja Man Singh of Amber and was inherited by his grandson Jai Singh. Jai Singh was ready to give away the land as a gift to Shah Jahan but Shah Jahan insisted on giving him four mansions in Agra.
2. Bazaars and caravanserais of Tage Gunje or Taj Ganj as it is called now were built around the same time Taj Mahal was built.
3. Taj Mahal was a meeting place for British and Indians. Taj Mahal complex was used as guest house for visitors. They would pitch tents and even stay in the buildings. Sometimes banquets were organized inside the Mihman Khana.
4. The first photographs of Taj mahal were produced by Dr John Murray, a civil surgeon at Agra. He took up photography in the late 1840's and his favourite subject was Taj Mahal.
5. One of the most beautiful remarks about Taj Mahal was made by the wife of Captain Sleeman. Upon visiting Taj Mahal her husband asked her what she thought of it. She exclaimed, “I cannot tell you what I think, for I know not how to criticize such a building, but I can tell you what I feel. I would die tomorrow to have such another over me.”
